Why teach? Why pursue a career that’s incredibly demanding, yet not financially lucrative? Why stay being “just a teacher” when it seems like the whole world thinks they can do a better job at it and often looks down on us?

Here’s why I do it:

1. I make a difference – Whether it’s giving them the confidence to believe in themselves, showing them that they can enjoy learning, or allowing them to explore new worlds through books, I can be a positive influence in my students' lives.

2. I can inspire – I can help students build self-esteem and believe in themselves and their ability to learn, no matter their background or abilities.

3. I can mentor – Children sometimes need someone to look up to and to help them develop skills like leadership and service. A teacher can help guide a child to harness the power of their own abilities and potential. We see the artists, musicians, writers, and future CEOs when other people just see kids.

4. I experience a diverse world – Students and teachers come to school from various socio-economic statuses, ethnic backgrounds, disabilities, and abilities. This diversity reminds me that we are all God’s children, all uniquely gifted, and all purposely created. Our differences are our strength and celebrating diversity helps develop true empathy.

5. I live with a deep sense of purpose – As a teacher, I believe I have a reason for doing what I’m doing. It helps bring value and meaning to my life. I’m convinced I was called to teach and I am fulfilling my purpose.

I hope to influence other teachers to be as passionate about teaching as I am, and I want to help them develop the skills to stay on this journey for the long haul.

As educators, we are on the metaphoric front lines and have the ability to influence generations. It’s an awesome responsibility—one that I will always be willing to accept.

What teacher changed your life?
